The XT9 Energy

Storing Prosthetic

Knee is the only

prosthetic knee

device designed to

mimic the functions

of the quadriceps

during intense

athletic and

extreme sports use

by highly active

amputees!

The XT9 Energy Storing Prosthetic Knee (ESPK) for high activity above the knee amputees, is the first prosthesis designed to enable AK amputees to enjoy extreme sports at and an active life at the top level. Thanks to an aerospace grade, light weight knee frame and other space age materials and components, the XT9 prosthetic limb can withstand the forces generated in extreme sports activities by even the most active amputees.
Many sports were once impossible for Above Knee (AK) amputees because of limitations with their prosthetics.  The XT9 prosthetic knee has overcome those limitations for amputees involved in extreme sports and active lifestyles.
Thanks to this new prosthetic device, sports like snowboarding are now possible for AK amputees around the world!  The dynamic functions of the XT9 knee make it the only prosthetic limb that mimics real knee functions for all boarding activities.
Surfing and kite boarding have never been a consideration for amputees because most high activity prosthetics are not water proof like the XT9 is.  It is the first high activity prosthesis that is warranted for water use.  The non-corrosive materials and protective measures for this artificial limb include Titanium, aerospace grade Aluminum and a military spec anodization among others.
Wakeboarding with an above knee prosthesis has only been feasible since the invention of the XT9 High Activity Prosthetic Knee.  Unlike any other artificial limb on the market, the XT9 allows dynamic flexion and hydraulic assistance for board control and absorption of shock when landing jumps and riding rough water.  Thanks to the control the amputee has with the XT9, Above Knee amputees can now enjoy aggressive water sports on the same level as able-bodied athletes!
The XT9 prosthetic knee was originally designed for telemark skiing.  This labor intensive form of back-country skiing requires the amputee to perform lunge like movement while balancing on their toes attached to skis as they slide down a slope at up to 40 mph or more!  Until Jarem Frye became the first AK amputee to telemark ski in 1997 it was considered impossible for anyone missing a lower limb to telemark ski.
In rock climbing the XT9 overcomes many difficulties faced with lower limb loss.  As the first prosthetic knee to create reliable stability on the side of a cliff or the underside of a overhang, the XT9 also provides comfort and support during falls as the shock assisted flexion cushions landings and absorbs impact.  It is also the only above knee prosthesis that offers positive toe placement and sturdy heel hooking ability on overhanging climbs and technical bouldering problems.
Inline skating and ice skating are two more sports in which the XT9 prosthetic knee surpasses any other prosthetic device.  The XT9 is the only product that offers dynamic quadriceps functionality for activities which require supported bending of the artificial knee and controllable push from the prosthetic limb for acceleration and control.
Ice climbing is greatly advanced by use of the XT9 prosthesis.  Allowing a better kick, a more stable set, and the ability to use the heel in overhanging and drastically technical ice climbing.  In addition, the XT9 functions the same in below freezing temperatures as it does rock climbing in the desert heat.  It is also warranted for the full spectrum of conditions between the two.
Alpine skiing has traditionally been done by amputees on only one ski with the assistance of "outriggers" (arm crutches with small skies attached to the bottom).  This is called "Three Tracking".  The XT9 prosthetic knee allows above knee amputees to ski with two skis and regular poles providing freedom from specialty gear and more mobility off the skis by allowing the amputee the freedom to walk with hands free from crutches.  This means easier skiing and less hassle during lunch at the mountain lodge.  It also means that amputees can now work for the Ski Patrol because for the first time, an AK amputee can now meet all of the criteria's this elite ski job requires.
Cross-country skiing is made possible as well with the XT9 artificial limb.  The powerful flexion assist of the XT9 supports the aggressive skating and climbing movements needed for cross country skiing with an artificial leg.  Unlike any other prosthetic knee that would collapse under pressure as the knee bends for this kind of activity, the XT9 will compress naturally and react dynamically releasing the "store and release" energy of the complex shock system to give the user a powerful push off for acceleration and propulsion.
The XT9 High Activity Prosthetic Knee is a highly specialized prosthesis component designed for use in extreme sports.  If you are an amputee you have probably been told that these sports are impossible.  Symbiotechs USA, LLC is here to show you that nothing is impossible, in fact "Everything is Possible!"   To find out more, and to see for yourself what is possible with the XT9 High Activity Prosthetic Knee, visit our photos page and check out the 'News' and 'Media' sections under 'Contact Us' to read about the XT9 winnings in the first ever eXtremity Games, and other accomplishments being made with this incredible prosthesis for AK amputees.
